Is It Sanliurfa Or Urfa?

First, let’s settle this debate. You’ll hear the city called Sanliurfa and Urfa, both of which refer to the historic city of Edessa. They’re in the same place and mean the same thing. Urfa is the old name of the city, which was later replaced with the more extended version. However, Urfa is pronounced oo-fa.

Things To Do In Sanliurfa

Sanliurfa isn’t short of amazing things to see and do. Simply walking around is a treat on its own, and of course, you should try some of the delicious food on offer. But if you’re keen to start planning your trip, here are some of my top recommendations for things to see and do in Urfa.

How To Get To Sanliurfa

Sanliurfa is located in the southeast of Turkey, very far from popular spots like Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara, Antalya, etc. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you plan your trip:

By Air

The nearest airport to Sanliurfa is the Sanliurfa GAP Airport (GNY). Several domestic airlines operate flights to this airport from major cities in Turkey, such as Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir. Upon arrival, you can either take a taxi or rent a car to reach your destination within the city.

By Bus

Sanliurfa is well-connected to other cities in Turkey by bus. Regular bus services depart from Ankara, Istanbul, Izmir, and many other major cities. The bus journey provides an opportunity to experience the scenic beauty of the Turkish countryside. Turkish bus companies like Metro Turizm, Ulusoy, and KamilKoc offer comfortable and reliable services.

However, we’re talking about a long journey, anywhere from 15 to 17 hours, depending on the number of stops.

By Train

Although Sanliurfa doesn’t have a train station, you can still take a train to nearby cities like Gaziantep or Adana and then continue your journey to Sanliurfa by bus or taxi. Trains in Turkey are known for their comfort and affordability, making them an excellent option for travelers.

By Car

If you enjoy road trips and the flexibility to explore at your own pace, driving to Sanliurfa can be an excellent choice. Major highways and well-maintained roads connect to the city, making the journey smooth. Distance and travel time can vary depending on where you start your trip, but directions and GPS systems make navigation hassle-free.

Is Sanliurfa Safe To Visit?

Sanliurfa is located in the southeast of Turkey, so it’s a common question to ask whether it is safe to visit. Much of this concern stems from the fact that as you go to this part of the country, you’re moving closer to the Syrian and Iraqi borders.

However, Urfa is 718km away from the Iraq border and 249km from the Syrian border, making it a significant location in southeastern  Anatolia.

So, it’s still a fair distance.

In terms of safety in the city, Urfa is a safe place to go. As long as you keep up to date with any developments and use your common sense, you’re sure to have a great time.

A visit to Sanliurfa is just like any other large city—use common sense, don’t flash your valuables, don’t go out on your own at night, and be mindful and respectful of local customs.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Sanliurfa?

Next question: When is the best time to go? Well, Urfa is amazing at any time of the year, but there are some considerations.

Personally, I think the best time to visit is during the spring and autumn months. During these seasons, the weather is pleasant and mild, making it ideal for exploring the city and its attractions.

In spring (April to June), you’ll experience blooming flowers, lush greenery, and comfortable temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). This is a great time to visit sites like the Pool of Sacred Fish (Balikligol) and the ancient fortress of Urfa Castle.

Autumn (Sep) is an excellent time to visit Sanliurfa, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F). The weather is generally sunny and warm, perfect for exploring outdoor attractions such as the Harran Ruins and Göbeklitepe, an archaeological site of great historical significance.

However, it’s important to note that Sanliurfa can experience hot temperatures during the summer months, with highs reaching up to 40°C (104°F). If you prefer milder temperatures, it’s advisable to avoid visiting in the peak of summer.

How Long To Stay In Sanliurfa?

Sanliurfa is a beautiful city with plenty to see and do, and the surrounding area should definitely be on your list, too. So, how long should you stay?

It really comes down to personal preference, but I would say at least three days. If you are pushed for time, you could see an overview of the city in two days, but more than that is best if you want to really immerse yourself in the culture and amazing sights. Of course, you’ll want to eat your way around the city (more on that shortly) and sample local delicacies like cig kofte, so a little extra time is useful!

Sanliurfa is a pretty large city, so you’ll have plenty of choices regarding where to stay. I always think it’s best to stay as central as possible. In that case, you’re not walking around at night trying to find your hotel, and you save time on commuting, giving you more hours to enjoy this beautiful city.

One word of warning – the food in Sanliurfa is savory and pretty spicy! If you’re not a big fan, you can always ask the waiter for ‘acisiz,’ which means ‘not spicy.’

Cig Kofte

One of the most famous dishes in Sanliurfa is “Cig Kofte,” which translates to “raw meatballs.” But don’t let the name deceive you – these savory treats are made with fine bulgur wheat rather than raw meat. The mixture is infused with spices, herbs, and peppers, giving it a tantalizing taste.

Cig kofte is typically wrapped in a lettuce leaf and enjoyed with a squeeze of lemon juice for a refreshing and satisfying snack.

Urfa Kebab

If you’re a fan of kebabs, prepare to be delighted by “Urfa Kebab.” This specialty of the region is made with succulent pieces of marinated lamb or beef, which are cooked over open flames. The secret to its exceptional flavor lies in the use of local spices and a slow cooking process that ensures the meat remains incredibly tender, making it a must-try in Urfa.
