What Does All-Inclusive Mean In Marmaris?

All-inclusive basically means that your room, food, drinks, and entertainment are all paid for in the price of your holiday.

Most of Marmaris’ all-inclusive options are large, so there’s plenty to do onsite. I’m talking about swimming pools—in some cases, there are water slides—entertainment for adults and children, buffet-option restaurants, shops, salons, and sometimes spas. There are also some hotels/resorts that have a-la-carte restaurants.

What Isn’t Included In These Best Marmaris Resort Options

It’s easy to assume that absolutely everything is included in the price of your holiday and that you can just cut loose and enjoy. For the most part, it is, but some things are extra. Let’s break it down.

What Is Included

  • Your hotel room
  • Air conditioning
  • Safe/security box
  • Buffet restaurant meals include breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as snacks like cake and ice cream, although these may be available at certain times of the day and sometimes without ice cream.
  • Soft drinks
  • Local alcohol – some resorts limit the amount, some don’t. This is something to check before you book. The bar will also have specific opening and closing hours.
  • Entertainment
  • Swimming pool access
  • Children’s playground access – if there is one
  • Access to the hotel’s private beach – if there is one

What Isn’t Included

  • Imported alcoholic drinks – you can usually get these from the bar, but you’ll pay extra
  • A-la-carte restaurants: You’ll usually need to book and pay extra unless your specific hotel allows one meal for free. Double-check this before booking.
  • Onsite shops
  • Excursions
  • Spas, hairdressers, massage, Turkish baths
  • Watersports

How To Avoid Extra Charges

As you can see, most things are included. The best way to avoid being charged extra is to be aware of what you do get versus what you need to pay for. From personal experience, it’s not so clear unless you ask or really look into the terms and conditions. So, do your research before you go.

Local Alcohol Vs. Imported Alcohol

Local alcohol in Turkey is generally fine. I don’t think it tastes much different from imported options. Avoiding imported drinks will save you a lot of money, as alcohol prices in Turkey are quite high.

Buffet Vs. A La Carte Restaurants

I personally wouldn’t bother with a la carte restaurants. Unless it’s a romantic meal on the beach, I would stick to the buffet options.

However, I would recommend heading outside your hotel/resort a couple of times to sample the local food in the restaurants around Marmaris. There are some amazing Turkish restaurants, and you’ll miss out if you stick to your hotel’s offerings.

Excursions

Excursions are cheaper if booked with a vendor in the resort rather than at your hotel. You can also haggle the price a little, which your hotel won’t generally do, especially if it’s part of a large travel company such as Jet2 or TUI.

Spa Services

For spas, hairdressers, massages, and Turkish baths, just shop around for prices. Your hotel may offer a discount for hotel guests, or they may be the cheapest around. Do a little research before deciding.

Pay As You Go Vs. Running A Tab

Finally, if you do choose to pay for extra drinks, e.g. imported, I’d recommend paying your bill as you go. Don’t run up a tab because it’s very easy to forget what you’ve had over the course of a holiday, and you won’t know if your bill is correct or not.

Pros & Cons Of Going All-Inclusive In Marmaris

All-inclusive isn’t for everyone. Personally, I like to stay in an apartment and self-catering, but I can certainly see how it’s a money-saver in the current climate, especially for families.

It’s important to weigh the pros and cons, so let’s examine them now.

Pros

  • Cost Savings. The majority of things are paid for, including food and drinks. This is a money-saver from the start, but it also gives peace of mind. For families, it’s a great plus that children can have unlimited soft drinks, and there’s no extra bill. In some cases, ice cream is also included, although do check because sometimes it’s extra.
  • Air-conditioning & Safety Deposit Box. Both air conditioning and a safety deposit box are included in the price. This isn’t the case for all regular hotels, and the price over a week or two-week holiday can be hefty. I also wouldn’t advise going without air conditioning in summer.
  • Daily Entertainment. Enjoy entertainment onsite every day, usually day and night.
  • Make Friends. You get to meet other people who are visiting at the same time. Children can also make friends quite easily.
  • Amenities. Most all-inclusive hotels have large pools, playgrounds, and other activities, so everything is within easy reach. This is ideal during the hottest months as you don’t have to walk around too much.

Cons

  • Miss Local Experiences. Having everything within easy reach and paid for means you might be tempted not to leave the grounds. This is a mistake. Marmaris is beautiful, and not exploring basically means you haven’t experienced it properly.
  • Generic Food. Eating in the hotel every day won’t show you the best of Turkish cuisine. In fact, all-inclusive food tends to be very generic and extremely repetitive. Marmaris has some amazing restaurants, and it would be a huge shame to miss out on them.
  • Miss Local Nightlife. Marmaris’s nightlife offers something for everyone, so if you stick to what the hotel offers, you’ll miss out.

How To Save Money While Visiting Marmaris

I can’t deny that Marmaris is more expensive than it used to be. However, it’s still cheaper than many places and offers value for money if you’re careful with your money.

Here are some tips on how to keep cash in your pocket during your Marmaris holiday:

Shop Around And Haggle

It pays to do a little shopping around when you want to buy a specific item or plan a particular excursion. There is a lot of competition, so you’ll always find it cheaper somewhere. It’s also a good idea to haggle a little, although remember that you can’t haggle in regular shops.

Eat In Local Restaurants (But Not The Beach Front)

The beachfront is very expensive for food and drinks, so if you can avoid at least eating there, it’s a money saver. The marina area is surprisingly cheaper than the beachfront, but I’d recommend going to the local Turkish restaurants. Look for ‘ocakbasi’ or ‘lokanta,’ and you’ll find the most delicious cuisine with a lower price tag.

Avoid BOGOF Cocktails

Firstly, there is hardly any alcohol in one of them, and secondly, they’re extremely overpriced. Personally, I have yet to have a fantastic cocktail in Marmaris, except for the odd strawberry daiquiri.

If you want to save money, stick to local drinks, especially Efes, the local beer.

Pay For Your Drinks As You Go

This isn’t a total necessity, but it’s a good tip to avoid having a huge bill and not knowing if you actually had everything on it. Please pay for your drinks as you have them. Yes, it isn’t very pleasant, but at least you know what you’re spending.

Shop In Supermarkets, Not Small Street Markets

You’ll find small shops selling snacks, drinks, cigarettes, and everyday items along the main streets, but these are often more expensive than the regular supermarkets. Look for BIM, A101, Sok, and Migros, where you’ll find everything you need at good prices.

Use Public Transport

Taxis are expensive, so unless it’s late at night and you need to use one for safety reasons, stick to public transport. The bus network is very good, known as Dolmus, and it runs very frequently. For instance, between Marmaris and Icmeler, it’s just 30TL.

Check Your Bills And Pay In Lira

Always check your bill before paying. The biggest mistake most people make is just beeping their card on the machine without checking. While most places are 100% honest, there is always the odd one, and it may be a very costly experience.

Also, pay in lira. It’s easy to think that you’ll get a better deal if you pay in pounds, euros, or dollars, but it’s not always the case. Yes, you can usually haggle on markets in international currency, but it doesn’t usually guarantee a cheaper price.

Don’t Use ATMs

Most ATMs charge hefty fees for taking lira from an international bank card, and trying to get international money from an ATM often costs even more. Take a little cash with you, change it at the exchange office when you arrive, and use your debit/credit card for the rest.

Cards like Revolut and Wise are ideal for using in Turkey as they offer very favorable rates and no/low fees.
