Autumn In Turkey: Weather, What To Expect & Where To Go

Autumn is a beautiful time to visit Turkey. The extreme heat of summer has passed, leaving ever-changing colors in its wake. And not to mention the crowds. The crowds have almost gone.

Personally, this is my favorite time of year. The fact that it’s so much easier to sleep at night is very welcome, but it’s also a great time to put on your comfortable shoes and explore. There are many things you simply can’t do in summer because it’s just too damn hot.

But in autumn? Exploration time, especially if you want to explore the vibrant bazaars and rocky valleys.

What You Can Expect This Autumn In Turkey

As the summer heat begins to fade away, Turkey transforms into a picturesque wonderland during the autumn months. From September to November, the country experiences milder temperatures, making it one of the best times to visit Turkey and explore its diverse landscapes and cultural hotspots.

The weather is mild, the natural landscapes are in full bloom, and the vibrant bazaars are less crowded, offering a unique cultural experience.

Here’s a peek at visiting Turkey in autumn to give you an idea of what to expect.

Changing Colors

I talked about how the changing colors of the leaves take center stage during the fall, especially in regions like Cappadocia, where the fairy chimneys and rock formations are enveloped in hues of red, orange, and gold.

The valleys come alive with a vibrant display of nature, creating a surreal backdrop for hot air balloon rides that offer a birds-eye view of the stunning autumn landscapes below.

Olive Harvest

A plate containing an assortment of Mediterranean appetizers including stuffed grape leaves, multicolored olives, and a spread of spicy dip.

One of the highlights of autumn in Turkey is the annual olive harvest, which takes place in late October and November.

If you happen to be in the Aegean or Mediterranean regions during this time, you’ll have the opportunity to witness the traditional methods of olive picking and processing and sample freshly pressed olive oil at local markets and festivals. Visiting during this time offers an absolutely stunning, rich cultural heritage experience.

Seasonal Produce

For food enthusiasts, autumn is a culinary delight in Turkey. The cooler weather brings an abundance of seasonal produce, from juicy pomegranates and sweet chestnuts to crisp apples and succulent grapes.

Street vendors and markets brim with a variety of freshly harvested fruits and vegetables, offering a feast for the senses and a chance to savor authentic Turkish flavors.

Turkish Festivals

Autumn is also the season for traditional Turkish festivals and celebrations. It’s time to get involved! From the International Istanbul Biennial, a prestigious art event that showcases contemporary works from around the world, to the Kadirga Festival in Istanbul, where locals gather to commemorate the historic conquest of the city, there’s no shortage of cultural events to experience and immerse yourself in.

If you’re on a culture trip’s 12-day group tour, you’ll stop at key historical sites, adding a rich cultural layer to your journey.

Smaller Crowds

Another plus point is that the crowds thin out after the peak tourist season, so autumn provides a more relaxed and intimate setting for exploring. Visiting during this time allows you to enjoy the best of Turkey’s attractions without the heat and crowds of the high season, making it the perfect shoulder season to explore.

Whether you’re wandering through the ancient ruins of Ephesus, marveling at the domed ceilings of Hagia Sophia, or soaking in the mineral-rich waters of Pamukkale’s terraces, you’ll have ample opportunity to appreciate the country’s rich history and architectural wonders at your own pace.

In fact, visiting Ephesus in the autumn, in particular, is a MUCH better idea than in the summer, believe me.

Tranquil National Parks

Let’s talk about nature for a moment. The country’s national parks and nature reserves become havens of tranquility, with hiking trails offering breathtaking views of mountains, forests, and waterfalls set against a backdrop of vivid autumn foliage. Yedigöller National Park and the Lycian Way trail are particularly popular during this time of year.

Warm Beach Holidays

If you’re a beach lover, the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts are still warm enough for sunbathing and swimming well into the autumn season.

The turquoise waters of Antalya, Bodrum, and Marmaris are ideal for indulging in water sports, boat tours, and leisurely seaside strolls, with fewer crowds and more affordable accommodation options to boot.

Autumn is also a time when the Black Sea region is known for its natural beauty, making it a perfect escape for those looking to explore Turkey’s lesser-known destinations like Artvin, where you can experience the region’s rich cultural heritage and stunning autumn landscapes.

But Autumn is a beautiful time to pack your case and head to Turkey!

Let’s Talk Weather Specifics

Turkey Travel Blog_Hidden Gems Of Turkey_Abant

Autumn runs loosely from September to November, and you’ll notice a significant change in the weather across various regions of the country. Let’s check out a few temperatures you can expect across different areas. It’s one of the best months to visit in terms of comfort and accessibility.

Istanbul And Marmara Region:

Month High Temperature Low Temperature
September 25°C / 77°F 18°C / 64°F
October 20°C / 68°F 14°C / 57°F
November 16°C / 61°F 10°C / 50°F

Can it rain? Yes, it can always rain in this part of the country, but it’s likely to be short-lived, especially in September. Istanbul’s weather can be quite unpredictable, especially in the shoulder season from April to May and September to November.

Aegean And Mediterranean Regions (Izmir, Antalya)

Month High Temperature Low Temperature
September 30°C / 86°F 25°C / 77°F
October 25°C / 77°F 20°C / 68°F
November 20°C / 68°F 15°C / 59°F

You’re very unlikely to see rain in September and early October. The odd downpour might occur in the later part of October into November, but it’s become much rarer as the years have gone on. The water is still warm, making it a great time for a beach vacation.

Central Anatolia (Ankara, Cappadocia)

Month High Temperature Low Temperature
September 25°C / 77°F 15°C / 59°F
October 18°C / 64°F 10°C / 50°F
November 12°C / 54°F 5°C / 41°F

Again, rain may occur in this region at any time of the year, but it’s less likely in the earlier stages of the autumn season. Cappadocia is one of the best places to visit during this time, especially if you want to glide across the landscape in a hot-air balloon.

Eastern Anatolia (Van, Erzurum)

Month High Temperature Low Temperature
September 20°C / 68°F 10°C / 50°F
October 15°C / 59°F 5°C / 41°F
November 10°C / 50°F 0°C / 32°F

This part of the country has quite unpredictable weather. It is likely to rain at some point during the autumn, especially from October onwards. Rain is very likely indeed towards the end of November. This region experiences a blanket of snow during the winter, attracting winter sports enthusiasts in the colder months.

Black Sea Region (Trabzon, Rize)

Month High Temperature Low Temperature
September 25°C / 77°F 20°C / 68°F
October 20°C / 68°F 15°C / 59°F
November 15°C / 59°F 10°C / 50°F

The north coast is known for its rainy weather outside of the primary summer months, which is what gives it its beautifully lush, green landscapes. This region is ideal for those looking to visit in autumn and explore the natural beauty that the Black Sea region is known for.

Popular Destinations For Autumn Holidays In Turkey

Now, before I go on, I should point out that you can go to any of these destinations at any time of year. However, between September and November, these spots will be more accessible, you will get around better, and you’ll get to see so much more in comfortable surroundings.

Cappadocia

Best sunset spots in Cappadocia feature a rugged landscape with large, soft-colored rocks and sparse greenery.

One of the most iconic regions in Turkey, Cappadocia is famous for its unique landscapes, which include fairy chimneys, underground cities, and hot-air balloon rides.

September to November offer the perfect weather for hot air balloon rides, which provide breathtaking views of the rock formations and valleys below.

Hiking during the autumn months is also much more accessible than in summer. Cappadocia is one of the best places in Turkey to visit in autumn due to its stunning natural landscapes and the pleasant weather that makes exploration enjoyable.

Visiting Cappadocia during this time allows you to witness the magical sight of the landscape changing colors with the season.

The other plus point is that if you want to go on a hot-air balloon ride, your trip is less likely to be canceled due to bad weather than in the winter months in Cappadocia.

Istanbul

Outdoor flower market with vibrant bouquets displayed under tents, bustling street and buildings in the background.

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I love Istanbul—like, really love it. And I say visit at any time. However, between September and November, you can enjoy the city’s numerous attractions without the peak tourist crowds.

Explore the historic landmarks such as the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, wander through the bustling markets, and indulge in delicious Turkish cuisine along the Bosphorus.

The pleasant weather during this time allows for leisurely walks along the streets of Istanbul, allowing one to soak in the city’s rich history and culture.

The spring and autumn seasons are ideal for visiting Istanbul if you want to avoid the heat and crowds. April, May, and September to November are some of the best months to experience the city.

I highly recommend you head to the Asian side and walk along the Bosphorus away from Uskudar. The small towns and parks along the water’s edge are serene, and the views are out of this world.

Antalya

Patara, Turkey: group of travelers sit on camping chairs and enjoy and watch the stunning sunset over the sand dunes of Patara beach, Antalya

Situated along the stunning Turkish Riviera, Antalya is a coastal paradise known for its crystal-clear waters, sandy beaches, and ancient ruins.

Visiting Antalya between September and November allows you to enjoy the warm Mediterranean climate while avoiding the intense summer heat. Between June and the end of August, the temperature consistently hits over 40C every day, and the evenings are still around 30C.

However, in the autumn months, you can relax on the beaches, explore the ancient city of Perge, and take a boat tour along the coastline to experience the beauty of the region at its best.

Plus, Antalya’s summer season doesn’t end until the middle of November, unlike the Dalaman region (Fethiye, Bodrum, Marmaris, etc.), which ends in mid-October. This is due to its location further east, which gives it warmer weather for longer.

Pamukkale

The white sands of Pamukkale Hot Springs, Turkey.

Famous for its travertine terraces of hot springs, Pamukkale is a natural wonder that should not be missed. The cascading pools of mineral-rich waters create a surreal landscape that is perfect for relaxing and rejuvenating.

Visiting Pamukkale between September and November allows you to soak in the thermal waters without the crowds, providing a serene experience surrounded by nature’s beauty.

I would definitely recommend you avoid visiting here in the peak summer months. It’s so busy you literally won’t get to see anything, and it’s simply not enjoyable. However, in the autumn, you get the milder weather and plenty of space to roam.

Ephesus

One of my favorite places on Earth! Step back in time and explore the ancient city of Ephesus, one of the best-preserved Roman ruins in the world. Wander through the Grand Theatre, the Library of Celsus, and the Temple of Artemis to get a glimpse of life in ancient times.

Visiting Ephesus between September and November offers pleasant weather for exploring the ruins without the intense summer heat, allowing you to fully appreciate the historical significance of this archaeological site.

Again, this isn’t a place to go during the peak summer months, not only because of the insane crowds but also because of the heat. There is very little shade around Ephesus, and the summer temperatures can be too much.

I recommend visiting during mid-October and November for the best conditions when the weather is mild and the crowds have thinned out.

Bodrum

Best beaches in Bodrum - Yacht in Aspat Bay, front view. Bodrum, Turkey

Known for its vibrant nightlife, beautiful beaches, and historical sites, Bodrum is a popular destination for those seeking a mix of relaxation and culture. Between September and November, Bodrum offers a more laid-back atmosphere compared to the peak summer months, allowing you to explore the Bodrum Castle, relax on the beaches, and enjoy the local cuisine at your leisure.

The pleasant temperatures during this time make it an ideal season for exploring the charming streets of Bodrum and soaking in the stunning views of the Aegean Sea.

You might also have heard that Bodrum is a pretty expensive place these days, and that's mostly because it attracts many rich people and celebrities.

However, if you visit outside the peak of summer, you might be able to find a cheaper hotel room compared to the previous months. Many boutique hotels offer better deals during the autumn, so it's worth considering if you're planning a visit.

What Should You Pack For Autumn In Turkey?

A woman in black clothing stands on a rocky hill in Devrent Imagination Valley, Cappadocia, looking into the distance under a clear blue sky.

I get this question a lot, and it really depends on where you're going.

South Coast Resorts

If you're visiting the south coast resorts, I'd say you still need your summer month clothing and your swimwear. The days can be very warm indeed, but evening times can be a little chilly as October starts to progress and November arrives. However, it's still very warm in the evenings in September. This region is ideal if you're looking for an extended summer experience, with warm waters that make it perfect for beach lovers.

Istanbul

Istanbul is a different beast. You should take a light rain jacket just in case you end up in a downpour, but you certainly won't need a big winter coat yet – not until December.

Light clothing and layers are your best friend in Istanbul because it can be very warm one day and slightly chilly the next. Should you still take shorts? Yes, especially in September. Visiting Istanbul during this time allows you to experience its vibrant bazaars without the sweltering heat of summer, making it one of the best times to visit this iconic city.

Cappadocia & Hiking Destinations

For places like Cappadocia, I'll advise layers again. The best rule of thumb is to think like it's the end of summer and keep a light rain jacket with you as a failsafe.

Of course, if you're hiking in Cappadocia, you'll need hiking boots or, at the very least, good-quality trainers/sneakers. Exploring the natural landscapes of Cappadocia in autumn is a must for anyone looking to experience Turkey's unique beauty.
