Here is your guide on what to wear in the Balkans. We cover the do’s and don’ts as well as some ideas on travel shoes and bags.
The Balkan countries occupy a distinct and rather large part of southeastern Europe, also known as the Balkan Peninsula. The region takes its name from the Balkan Mountains that extend between Serbia and Bulgaria’s border all the way to the Black Sea.
The region comprises many countries. Some definitions consider up to a dozen nations to be entirely or at least partially located in the Balkans. Most often, however, the definition—or public perception—is limited to the ex-Yugoslavian countries, Albania, Bulgaria, and Romania. It’s always up for debate, and the question “what countries are in the Balkans?” may have a different answer depending on who you ask.
As we at Chasing the Donkey focus on the entire Balkan Peninsula, this article talks about what to expect when traveling in the Balkans, in the widest sense of the word.
