Tips When Exchanging Money In Istanbul

Solo Travel In Turkey

When it comes to exchanging money in Istanbul, you should keep a few things in mind. First and foremost, finding a reputable currency exchange company is important.

Quite a few companies offer currency exchange services in Istanbul, so it’s important to do your research and find one that is reliable and has a good reputation.

Once you’ve found a reputable currency exchange company, the next thing you need to do is figure out what type of exchange rate you’re looking for. There are two types of exchange rates – the buy rate and the sell rate.

The buy rate is the rate at which you can purchase foreign currency, while the sell rate is the rate at which you can sell foreign currency. Generally speaking, the buy rate is always higher than the sell rate.

Finally, it’s also important to know any fees or commissions the currency exchange company may charge. Some companies will charge a flat fee per transaction, while others may charge a percentage of the total amount exchanged.

Be sure to ask about any fees or commissions before making your final decision so there are no surprises down the road.

What Are The Different Methods Of Exchange In Istanbul

Did Turkey Change Its Name To Turkiye

There are a few different ways to exchange currency, each with its own pros and cons. The most common methods are:

  • Currency Exchange Offices are typically found in airports or major tourist areas. They offer the convenience of exchanging currency quickly and easily, but their rates are usually not as competitive as other options. Though you will never get the best exchange rate at an airport, so avoid that unless you need some small change for your driver or public transport
  • Banks: Banks can provide more competitive rates than currency exchange offices, but the process is often more complicated and time-consuming. You will usually need to have an account with the bank in order to exchange currency, and the transaction can take several days to process
  • Online Currency Exchanges: These websites allow you to buy and sell foreign currency online. They typically offer very competitive rates and the transactions can be processed quickly and easily. However, it is important to research any online currency exchange before using it, as there have been some cases of scams or fraud

How To Find The Best Rates

If you’re looking for the best currency exchange rates in Istanbul, remember a few things. First, it’s important to know what your base currency is. This is the currency you’ll be converting from and will usually be your home country’s currency. Second, consider what currencies are available at the airport or city. You may need to convert your base currency into another one before exchanging it for a new Turkish Lira (TRY). Lastly, compare rates between different companies before making a decision.

While it’s possible to find good rates at the airport or in the city, it’s often better to shop around and compare rates between different companies first. There are a few ways to do this:

  • Look online: Many companies have websites where you can view their current rates
  • Call around: Give different companies a call and ask about their rates. Be sure to ask if there are any hidden fees or charges
  • Use a comparison website: There are websites that allow you to compare rates from different companies side-by-side. This can be a helpful way to find the best deal.

Where Not To Change Money In Istanbul

When you arrive at the airport, you will see options to change money. I do not recommend changing money in airports unless it’s necessary (and even then, do a small amount), as the exchange rates are always terrible, and there is also a commission charge of up to 5%.

I also would never recommend you change money at your hotel – again, the rates (and maybe even commission) will be poor.
